What is VAT, and when might it appear on an invoice?

Value Added Tax; it appears if the business is VAT-registered and the goods/services are taxable.

VAT is Value Added Tax, a tax charged on most goods and services by businesses that are registered for VAT. It appears on an invoice when the supplier is VAT-registered and the goods or services are taxable. Invoices from these businesses show the VAT amount separately, along with the rate applied. If a business isn’t VAT-registered, or the item is exempt or outside the scope of VAT, no VAT is charged and nothing extra appears on the invoice.

Variable Added Tax; it applies to all invoices regardless of registration.

Vehicle Access Tax; it applies to vehicle-related services only.

It is never shown on an invoice.
